Using GPS Devices Helps Keep Track of Farm Tractors

Tractor firms may have been slow to start offering security systems, but 2011 looks like being the year they start to take theft seriously.

Every year, in the UK alone, an estimated ?50-70m of plant and agricultural machinery is stolen but only 5% is recovered. And farm machinery theft is on the rise.

McCormick and Landini started the ball rolling last year by offering the Datatag/CESAR tagging and registration system on new tractors at no extra cost, followed a few months later by John Deere. This system involves fitting the tractor with coded identification microdots that cannot be seen by thieves but can be read by police forces with the fight equipment. There's also an almost-impossible-to-remove sticker that shows the tractor has been tagged and the vehicle is also put on the CESAR database.

High-tech GPS trackers are also becoming increasingly available. New Holland has just announced a deal with Tracker whereby UK dealer dealers will offer the company's GPS tracking system to farmers. Between June 2009 and July 2010, Tracker recovered more than ?3.5m --worth of stolen plant and farming equipment in the UK.

Tracker is unusual in using a VHF signal to allow police forces to track stolen vehicles, although it offers combined VHF and GPS systems to give the maximum chance of finding them.

Massey Ferguson has also announced that it will offer the CESAR registration and Datatag scheme through its dealer network. It offers a new vehicle immobiliser too, which uses an electro-mechanically controlled valve to shut off the fuel system and lock the hydraulics. To activate the system, operators use either a touch key-fob or tap a PIN number into a keypad. Its new AgCommand telematics system, announced at this week's LAMMA show, also means it offers a way of tracking vehicles by GPS and transmitting information over a mobile...

OTS Tankcare Provides Technical Advice for Farm Fuel Stores

Gloucestershire tank manufacturer Oil Tank Supplies (OTS) has launched a service called OTS Tankcare, which provides technical advice and preventative maintenance for farm fuel stores.

"The basic service comprises a site visit and inspection of the storage tank," explains OTS support manager, Darrin Francis. "This covers fuel sampling, analysis and a tank status report for a fixed fee of ?85 plus VAT."

Depending on the findings, the report will recommend follow-up actions and advice for immediate remedial action.

There is no obligation to use OTS and farmers can simply implement our recommendations by using their own resources or pass these over to their existing service support providers," says Mr Francis.

"We are recommending that existing storage tanks are inspected and, if required, cleaned thoroughly in readiness for the new specification biofuels. This gas-oil is less tolerant of tank contamination and it has hydroscopic properties, which means it will absorb and release water as ambient environmental conditions change. Water will then encourage the growth of biomaterials that can clog filters.

"The consequences of this will show up as dispensing pumps become slower and, in a worstcase scenario, contamination of the fuel, which can lead to breakdowns."

Regular maintenance is essential, he adds. As well as checking that oil storage tanks are free of water, farmers should also make sure ancillary equipment such as filters, fuel pumps and valves are biodiesel compatible.

OTS also offers a planned preventative maintenance plan that covers inspection, tank scrub and decontamination service. The company is also certified for the removal of fuel waste.

Global Farm Equipment Market Report

Farm equipments or agricultural equipments refer to the machineries and equipments which facilitate the agricultural operations to increase the yield as well as quality of crops. Agricultural equipments are available for all functions across the agricultural value chain. Some of the important ones include tractors, levelers, ploughs, drills, seeders, planters, trans-planters, harrow, tiller, sprayer, plough, harvester, thresher, digger, reaper, graders, cleaner, and huller. Amongst all the categories, tractors hold the major share in terms of sales, followed by harvesting machinery.

With the increasing mechanization and rising awareness regarding the importance of farm equipments for increasing yields as well as for doing operations in less time and with more ease, the market for farm equipments has been increasing for the past years. The market although declined in 2009, mainly due to the global economic slowdown which engulfed the global economy in late 2007, but with the recovery of the economy, the farm equipment market also started increasing in 2010, and is further expected to increase in the coming years. With the increasing population, and rising standard of living, the demand for food is likely to increase in the coming years.

In order to meet this increasing food demand, owing to the limited arable land availability, there is a need for improvement in technologies, which can be attained by increasing mechanization in agriculture, which would in turn lead to growth in the demand for agricultural equipments.

The European Union is the largest market for agricultural equipments, followed by North America, China and India. The global market for agricultural equipments is highly competitive and consolidated with top three players, controlling more than half of the market.

Key Topics Covered:

1. Agriculture or Farm Equipments

2. Global Farm Equipment Market

3. European Union Farm Equipment Market

4. North American Farm Equipment Market

5. Indian...

Electric Drive Systems

20 technologies changing agriculture
SOMEDAY FARMERS will see tractors, sprayers and other farm vehicles generate electric power to run auxiliaries and attachments. This move will occur as farm vehicles become larger and more complex. It takes extra engine power to operate all these extra features.

Electrification should start appearing after Tier 4 engines are fully developed and introduced. Equipment manufacturers have invested large portions of research and development budgets to meet the stringent EPA emissions guidelines. That money will open up in a few years.

A few manufacturers already have completed work on electrification. AGCO displayed a concept electric drive package on a RoGator last year at a farm show. The 311-hp vehicle was equipped with a 650v electric generator that sent power to electric wheel motors.

AGCO reports the prototype RoGator produces 30% more power to the ground and a 20% savings in fuel with the electric generator and motors. Disadvantages include extra weight from the generator and motors along with cost of the components.

At a European farm show in 2007, John Deere showed a prototype tractor that produced electricity. The 7530 E-Premium featured a crankshaft-driven electric generator, which replaced the standard alternator. The generator was attached to the engine flywheel to produce 20 kW of electricity. A few of the features operated with electricity were air conditioning, engine cooling and air brakes.

Chopping on The Baler Gives Bedding Benefits

Bedding cows on rape and wheat straw that's been chopped on the baler is a great way to cut down on haulage and dust, as a Somerset farmer explained to David Cousins

No one could complain about a lack of variety when it comes to choosing bedding material for cows to lie on in their cubicles. The choice ranges from straw to sawdust, shavings to sand, and waste paper to robber pillows.

But these materials all have their drawbacks, whether it's the cost of sawdust, the lagoon-clogging qualities of sand or the sheer dustiness of straw that's chopped and blown into cubicles.

For Somerset father-and-son dairy and arable farmers Chris and Jon Bult, it was the eye-watering cost of shavings that made them look at alternatives. They have 150 black and whites and Jerseys at Collum Farm, Kewstoke, near Weston-Super-Mare, but are planning to build that up to 300 head this year.

"We found we were spending ?45-50 a day on wood shavings, which amounted to ?16,000 a year," says Jon Bult. "It seemed ludicrous.

"The shavings don't break down easily, either. You can inject them with a slurry injector, but if you use a splashplate they just form a mat over the grass."

They weren't too enthusiastic about using a chopper-blower to blast straw into the cubicles, either. Not only does it produce a lot of dust, but stones picked up by the baler wear the cubicle mats. And then there's the double handling.

"The trouble with the conventional way of doing it is that you have to put the straw first through a baler and then through a chopper in the livestock shed," he says. "That doesn't make sense."

The answer for the Bults came in the form of a Claas Quadrant 3200, with its FineCut chopping mechanism. This uses a set of 49 knives to...

Astronautical Auction

In April, NASA announced plans to "donate" four space shuttles to American museums for about $30 million apiece. That's a bit steep for armchair astronauts, but a surprising amount of semi-affordable space stuff goes to auction each year.

Space suit (Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, 1975)
SOLD FDR $242,DDD AT BDNHAMS

The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project was the first joint space mission between Russian and American astronauts. Soyuz 19's commander, Alexei Leonov, wore this suit.

Vostok 3KA-2 capsule (1961)
SOLD FDR $2,882,500 AT SOTHEBY'S

The Vostok 3KA-2 went on the final test flight before Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. Its crew was a mannequin and a dog.

Gemini rocket engine (Gemini 9A 1966)
SOLD FDR $12,650 AT CHRISTIES

This rocket engine, which helped propel the three-day, manned Gemini 9A mission, sold for three times the amount of a similar Gemini 5 engine that had never been in space.

Mercury hatch shingle (Mercury-Atlas 5 1961)
SOLD FDR $43,700 AT CHRISTIES

A chimp named Enos was the only passenger on Mercury-Atlas 5, NASA's last test flight before John Glenn orbited Earth.
